Iowa City's University of Iowa-driven rental market and surrounding established neighborhoods keep local plumbers and electricians covering very different types of calls throughout the year. Nicole answers the phone whether it's a landlord or a homeowner calling. This is a quick look at the numbers behind that — what a call is worth in Iowa City, when the ones you miss tend to come in, and what it takes to answer every single one.
A typical plumbing job in Iowa City runs around $390. Miss three or four of those calls in a month — the ones that come in while you are under a sink, on a roof or driving between Downtown Iowa City and Manville Heights — and you have given away more than most owners spend on marketing all quarter. One captured job covers roughly 3 months of the Starter plan at $99/month.
The University of Iowa's large student rental population near downtown and Goosetown generates a predictable rush of plumbing and electrical maintenance calls right before each semester starts, exactly when property managers need fast turnaround and a small crew is already stretched thin. Iowa's hard winter freezes still hit Manville Heights and other older Iowa City neighborhoods hard, and burst-pipe emergencies during a cold snap can arrive faster than a small plumbing company can answer while already working on the first one.
